What is this all about?

Hi, my name is Katie. I am a 17 year old girl from Southwest London and I completed my GCSEs last year. A few months later, in October 2018,  I embarked on the biggest adventure of my life so far.

Summer School Science

You may be asking what this is all about.

On the 14th of October 2018, I was one of 34 lucky students setting out to spend 7 months on the 3 masted schooner Thor Heyerdahl.

The map below shows our route and the amount of days planned for each landfall.

On my trip I will be visiting a number of countries:

  • North of Germany
  • England
  • Tenerife
  • St Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Grenada
  • Panama
  • Cuba
  • Bermuda
  • Azores

To clarify, this is not a cruise or a holiday. This was hard work. We had a full year 11 German curriculum on board and were part of the crew in charge of maintaining and sailing the ship. This included cleaning the ship for an hour every day, sailing through day and night and once a week cooking for a full day for all 50 people (a 14 hour day).

I was one of 34 lucky young people to be chosen for this opportunity, there will also be 14 adults to teach and help run the ship with us.

If you want to know where the ship currently is, have a look at this link www.vesselfinder.com/?imo=5221491 — The vessel finder website allows you to find the location of any registered ship in the ocean using the installed GPS systems.
